Early Years Centre - Pender Harbour Outreach

The Sunshine Coast Early Years Centre services families with children from conception to age 6 by providing easily accessible programs, information, and services to support their children’s development. Families are able to access the Early Years Centre through locations at Gibsons Elementary School, Sechelt Learning Centre, Madeira Park Elementary School, Gibsons and Area Community Centre, and through reaching out to community programs.

In Pender Harbour, our Early Years Centre also has an Outreach component that connects new parents to resources and services by providing home visits to new parents as well as through our weekly “Coffee and Connections” where new parents and caregivers can meet for a warm breakfast and connect with each other as well as find information on services offered in Pender Harbour and on the Sunshine Coast.

This Resource Guide for Babies & their Families provides a list of programs a services for families living in the Pender Harbour & Egmont community. Local information and contact about everything from “Bellies & Babies” to Early Years Centres.

Sunshine Coast Youth Outreach

This Coast-wide initiative seeks to increase youth safety by connecting and referring youth to local resources, focusing on risk reduction and providing the community with a broader understanding of youth issues and needs such as food security, transportation, healthy relationships, mental health, and housing. The program is free and confidential and is administered through SC Community Services Society.

Roots of Empathy

Established in 1996, Roots of Empathy (ROE) is an award winning, evidence-based classroom program that has shown dramatic effect in reducing levels of aggression among school children while raising social/emotional competence and increasing empathy. More than 500,000 children have benefitted from the program world-wide.

At the heart of the program are a neighbourhood infant and parent who visit the classroom nine times over the school year. A trained ROE instructor visits the classroom 27 times over the year, working with the classroom teacher to help the children observe the baby’s development emotionally, physically and mentally. Students are guided in identifying the baby’s feelings and invited to reflect on their own feelings and the feelings of others. The emotional literacy taught in the program lays the foundation for more caring classrooms where children begin to sense the importance of understanding other people’s perspectives.
