ACEbc is the provincial professional umbrella for Community Schools. Since 1975, it has been active in the areas of community education, community school development, advocacy, training, research and resource publication. ACEbc is committed to building community and school partnerships, integrating services, and promoting life-long learning to benefit children, families and communities. In April 2015, in partnership with SD46, the five Community Schools of the Sunshine Coast hosted the Annual Provincial ACEbc Conference “The Heart of the Matter”.

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY SCHOOL?

Community Schools are non-profit societies committed to supporting and improving student learning and to strengthening individuals, families and vibrant, healthy communities by providing quality programs, lifelong learning opportunities, and connections to school and community resources.

There are five Community Schools on the Sunshine Coast. We each provide services to the schools and communities within our reach. We enhance the work of our School District but we are not employed by them. Pender Harbour Community School Society serves Madeira Park Elementary and Pender Harbour Elementary Secondary schools as well as the greater community of Pender Harbour & Egmont (Area A).

Pender Harbour Community School provides programs, services and activities that address social, physical, nutritional and emotional well-being of our community. Our main programs and activities include:

  • After-school programs
  • Student & family support
  • Nutrition programs
  • Community Recreation programs
  • Shared-learning program
  • Youth program
  • Restitution program

Our vision is to be a self-sustaining organization supporting a variety of opportunities, including capacity building and direct services, for individuals and groups in the greater Pender Harbour communities. Our mission is to collaborate with individuals and groups to sustain a vibrant healthy community by offering education/learning and skills development opportunities, as well as support services.

As a non-profit society, we are primarily funded through CommunityLINK / Ministry of Education, Sunshine Coast Regional District, Province of BC’s Direct Access and various other project grants and donations. We are also grateful for and reliant upon the generous support of donations from businesses and individuals and for the volunteers whose contributions help to fill in the gaps.

We provide programs and services to all residents of Pender Harbour/Area A regardless of age, ability, ethnicity, gender, religion, income, or sexual orientation wherever possible.
